Delaware County has recorded its first traffic fatality of 2016, after a Marion woman was fatally injured in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 69. Police say 62-year-old Rebecca Scott was driving in the southbound lanes near the Grant-Delaware county line when her vehicle left the roadway, struck the wire retainer in the median, and spun back onto the interstate. She then drove on to a nearby rest stop, where she notified authorities. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital after complaining of pain. The coroner says her injuries included a ruptured spleen.

Today marks the first day on the job for local officials elected last November. Anderson Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. and members of his new team are set to get down to business. The first few days for the new mayor will be spent continuing with the transition from one administration to another and tying up some of the loose ends.

A New Year’s Day surprise for one local couple when mom went into labor a few weeks early. Bentlee Tyler Scott Wolfe was born at 12:13 p.m. Friday at Community Hospital Anderson, becoming the first baby born in one of Anderson’s two hospitals in 2016. He weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces & was 18.5 inches long.

Plainfield High School students will return to class today despite new threats made against the school. The threat was posted overnight Saturday, and is believed to be the same person who made several online threats last month. The person, posting on Facebook, said they would shoot anyone in the school. The district closed schools the day before Christmas break while police investigated the threats. Beginning today and until further notice, backpacks are not allowed at the school.

A Randolph County father and son have filed suit against White River Township and its fire department. The lawsuit says they were seriously injured when their vehicle was struck from behind by a township rescue truck in December of 2013. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the victims’ “severe and permanent injuries.” Henry Circuit Court Judge Kit Crane has been appointed as special judge in the case.

Mayor Dennis Tyler is earmarking $1 million to kick-start the city’s proposed maker’s hub. The Muncie Star Press reports that the city will create a $1 million revolving loan fund and loan that money to Sustainable Muncie, the local nonprofit created in 2015 to turn the former Midwest Towel/Cintas facility downtown into GearBox: Muncie, a maker’s hub aimed at fostering local businesses, artists and artisans.

Hoosier Park takes the off-track betting ‘smoking dispute’ to the state Supreme Court. The Indiana Supreme Court wants to hear more from Hoosier Park Racing & Casino about why patrons at its Winner’s Circle off-track betting parlor in downtown Indianapolis should be allowed to light up when smoking in similar public places is generally banned by city ordinance. Justices have scheduled oral arguments for Jan. 28.
