Tips For Incoming Cold Weather
We’re not out of the woods yet, and your water pipes can freeze. Over the past 12 months, State Farm said Indiana ranked 15th in frozen pipe claims for the company, with over $19.9 million paid for 975 claims according to WTHR. Do you know where your home’s water meter outside and the shutoff valves are inside? Know that, just in case there is a problem. If your water softener is in the garage, throw a blanket on top of it and keep your garage door closed.
More cold weather tips: Close curtains during the night. Closing window coverings at night can help keep unwanted cold air out. Utilize sunny days and open curtains for added warmth. Don’t try to outsmart your thermostat. Setting your thermostat higher than you actually want won’t heat your home any faster.
Utilize heat from the fireplace. Lower your thermostat to 55 degrees when you have a fire going. If you don’t, all the warm air from the furnace will go right up the chimney, which wastes energy – and money.
