The jail population is an issue in Delaware County and this year, county taxpayers will foot an estimated bill of $500,000 to house prisoners in other lockups. Just last week there were more than 300 inmates in the jail that has a capacity of 220. The revelation comes as plans are in the works to build a new jail, perhaps twice as big for roughly $45 million.
