A Muncie man is facing 40 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to charges stemming from an attempted home invasion that led to his friend’s death. The Star Press reports that 28-year-old William J. Smith pleaded guilty to four felonies in a plea deal to dismiss a pending murder charge. Smith did not fire the gunshot that killed 26-year-old Scott Allen Gilliam last Sept. 20, but is facing the charge because he had been a participant in events that led to his death.
