The Elwood City Council approved an ordinance that will allow residents to own up to six female chickens. However, the ninth amendment to the city’s livestock and exotic animals ordinance will require owners to pay an annual fee of 5 dollar per hen, to allow for the inspection of the chicken shelter by the city’s animal control officer. The chicken amendment is one of several measures related to Elwood’s livestock and exotic animal ordinance considered by the city council, since a resident’s pet pig escaped last fall. A special subcommittee has been assembled to study the various issues within the ordinance.
