Madison County is in need of a new jail. And your taxes may go up to help fund it. Officials are considering raising the ‘local option income tax’ by a half percent. That may not sound like much, but a person making minimum wage paying $150 in local taxes would pay 225 – 300 if the tax is doubled. According to the Herald Bulletin, the cost of constructing a 400-bed jail has been estimated at $40 to $50 million.
