Muncie Community Schools is implementing updates to graduation requirements and course offerings, aiming to provide students with more academic options and support.   During a recent discussion, officials reviewed a proposal to shift from the traditional Core 40 diploma to a new 42-credit requirement, set to take effect with the Class of 2029. This means that current eighth graders would be the first group required to meet the new standard, which is designed to expand learning opportunities while maintaining state requirements. New course offerings have also been added to the handbook.

Freshman Academy will help incoming ninth graders transition into high school, providing resources and guidance during their first year. Discussed at this week’s MCS Board of Trustees meeting, Freshman Seminar will focus on building key academic and organizational skills to help students succeed throughout high school. The district is also moving forward with changes to its graduation honors system.

An honor graduate policy, originally approved by the board a few years ago, will officially go into effect with the current junior class. Explained at the recent MCS Board of Trustees meeting, This means there will no longer be a valedictorian or salutatorian, and students will instead be recognized under the new honors system. More details on this policy can be found on pages 44 and 45 of the student handbook.  These updates are now part of the district handbook, with some changes already in place and others rolling out in the coming years.

WLBC Reporter Kaleb Wildman filed this report.

The Indiana impact of that Federal buy out for remote workers?  No one seems to know for sure, but the Indy Star reports roughly 14,000 could be impacted, but the OMB report cited doesn’t show the number of federal civilian employees who chose to work remotely.

Kurt Darling will be joining WLBC and Woof Boom Radio as Sports Director later in February.  He’s been working in Indy Radio and Network Indiana for 9 years.
