Prairie Creek Beach Reopens After Algae Levels Drop Naturally; Chemical Treatment Still Planned Pending State Approval

Doing nothing seems to have solved the Prairie Creek water problem.  As reported first Thursday on WMUN news Radio, a release from the city of Muncie said the beach was reopened, but the chemicals to fix the water weren’t approved fast enough by the State.  The same release stated the improvement “was achieved without chemical treatment, due in part to the proactive decision to temporarily close the beach last week,”  though the CDC says those bacteria thrive in water…often from fertilizer runoff, sewage, or urban/industrial discharge. These blooms can also be fueled by warm water temperatures and slow-moving or stagnant water conditions.  The treatment is now expected to occur early this week and poses no risk to public health. Swimming will remain safe both before and during the treatment process.  Mayor Dan Ridenour was quoted as saying “We are also focused on ensuring Prairie Creek is in peak condition as we prepare to host the Ironman 70.3 triathlon on July 12. It’s important that we showcase the very best of Muncie.”

The Prairie Creek beach opened back up, just in time for the July 4th weekend.  City of Muncie says the levels of blue green algae lowered, without chemical treatment.  They still intend to treat the water this week – hoping for needed permits from the DNR.
