Suspect In Elwood Police Officer’s Shooting Death Withdraws Insanity Plea

The man accused of murdering an Elwood police officer nearly three years ago will no longer use an insanity defense in the case. WTHR reports Carl Boards II is facing the death penalty for shooting Ofc. Noah Shahnavaz during a traffic stop on July 31, 2022. Last year, Boards’s lawyers claimed their client had an intellectual disability, but in July, a judge said three doctors that examined Boards all found him competent to stand trial.
