Kate Hughes returns as Muncie Central volleyball coach

Muncie, Ind. – Kate Hughes knows all about the storied history of Muncie Central’s volleyball program. She was part of the coaching staff in 2009 and 2010 when the Lady Bearcats finished as state champions and state runners-up, respectively. She brings those memories and 17 years of overall coaching experience with her as the team’s new head coach, replacing interim coach Chelsie Bilby.
“I am excited and optimistic to work with this program again,” Hughes said. “I know that with positive energy and a strong work ethic, this program can be incredibly successful.”
This is Hughes’ second stint as head coach. She also led the program from 2018-2021. Not only is she optimistic about getting the team back to its winning ways, but she’s just as eager to create an environment that promotes individual and team growth, both in volleyball and civic engagement.
“I’m passionate about helping student athletes achieve their full potential, not only in the classroom or gym, but also learning about life lessons,” she said. “We want to be positive role models for the community, and become the best versions of ourselves.”
It’s the same philosophy she’s shared with her players at Munciana Volleyball where she has coached for the past 16 years.
“Kate is an amazing teacher who brings a wealth of experience and a strong passion for developing student athletes both on and off the court,” Muncie Central Athletic Director Jeff Holloway said. “I have personally seen Kate in action in practice and game situations, and I am excited to see how she will inspire our student athletes to develop and compete, and leave their own legacy on the Muncie Central volleyball program.”
Hughes is a social studies teacher at Central with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Ball State. She lives in Muncie with her husband and two children.
