For some last-minute shoppers, it was the Nightmare before Christmas: Credit card machines crashed at Kroger on Christmas Eve, leading to crazy long lines and shoppers forced to pay cash, write a check or leave the basket behind and start over at another store. The nationwide outage started around noon and was fixed within a few hours.
