In a special session of the Indiana General Assembly, lawmakers passed HB 1315, the legislation that provides Ball State University with the opportunity to appoint a new school board to manage Muncie Community Schools. Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane of Anderson called the move a setback for democratic local governance of public schools. He says gone are the locally-elected Muncie School Board, local voting rights, and collective bargaining rights for Muncie teachers. The BSU Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday to give final approval to the takeover of Muncie schools.
