Schools Head Pushing For Mandatory Kindergarten

Indiana’s school superintendent is pushing for mandatory kindergarten statewide. The Legislature provided additional funding for pre-K this year, but Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick is concerned some children won’t follow up with kindergarten. She notes state law doesn’t require attendance. She tells the Tribune-Star that 7,000 Indiana children aren’t enrolled in kindergarten. She says they could face many disadvantages when they start formal schooling.
