The Muncie Community Schools district has requested that a hearing that would have decided if the district needed to honor its teacher contract, be cancelled. Two months ago, reports the Star Press, the district filed a petition asking the Indiana Education Relations Board to allow the district to no longer operate under the standing 2014-15 contract while negotiations on a new contract continued. The argument was that the contract caused a deficit for the district, which is illegal under state law. As a result, the district asked for about $6 million to be cut. The hearing had been scheduled for Jan. 31 in Indianapolis.
