MadCo commissioners violated Public Records law, counselor rules

The Madison County commissioners violated the Access to Public Records law, according to the Indiana Public Access Counselor. The records request was made in November last year for records needed in a lawsuit for the Highway Department. The commission responded in March that they didn’t have any relevant records. The Public Access Counselor ruled that the commission took too long to respond. The counselor said citizens are entitled to a timely response, even if there are no records. He added that records requests are routine and the commission has an obligation to organize records and respond in a timely manner.
