Most of Indiana’s counties do not have a problem with lead poisoning. Madison County is not among them. It’s one of the five worst counties in the state when it comes to the rate of kids battling lead poisoning. Mike Mettler with the Indiana Department of Health says it’s because the houses there are of a certain age. A disproportionate amount was built before 1978, when lead paint was banned. Of the 7,400 kids under the age of four in Madison County, just 725 were tested for lead exposure. Of that group, 78 tested positive.
