Fairgrounds to get new building

The Hamilton County 4H Council will open a new, 10,000 squarefoot multipurpose building at the county fairgrounds by summer.  The county council has approved the $154,000 project that is being paid for through donations.  It will primarily be used for llamas during the county fair, but other programs can also be held in the building.

Candidate filing begins

Wednesday marks the start of filing for the May primary elections.  The filing period ends February 23.  Municipal elections are on the docket this year, including many town council, city council and mayoral positions.

Crash leaves homes in the dark

A crash along a Jay County road Monday knocked out power to about 50 people.  Indiana-Michigan officials say power was restored about two-and-a-half hours after the accident.  The driver of the car, Nathan Crisler, 19, wasn’t hurt.

Taking out a loan

Madison County government will borrow nearly $5.5 million to make ends meet between property tax draws.  The county council authorized plans to take out a loan during an emergency meeting Monday.  The final amount is less the county officials feared.  The Indiana Bond Bank will provide the loan.

Woman's case heads to court

The murder trial of Gas City resident Joyce Hawkins begins Tuesday in Grant County.  She’s accused in the shooting death of her husband, Timmy Ray Hawkins, whose remains have never been found.  Prosecutors also don’t have the murder weapon in the case.
