New Castle Man Escapes Jail Time After Allegedly Threatening Stepson

A New Castle man convicted of attempted murder more than 30 years ago is facing charges yet again after he allegedly threatened to shoot his then-stepson. 7

1-year old Larry Calvin Newman pleaded guilty to a felony charge of possessing a firearm while a convicted felon. He could have faced up to 12 years in prison, but instead, a Henry County judge only placed him on probation for two years.

Back in 1985, Newman twice kidnapped and shot a 20-year old Elkhart County man in the face. Newman pleaded guilty but mentally ill to attempted murder in both Elkhart and St. Joseph counties. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, but was released in 1994.
