Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger is urging county officials to start planning for the construction of a new county jail. The current facility, opened in the 1980s, has 253 inmates with a capacity of just 207. To relieve the overcrowding, they’re sending some inmates to Blackford County at a cost of 35 dollars each per day. Mellinger does not expect jail numbers to decrease any time soon.
